Great Faces…Places…and Amazing Races!

Our first DiscipleTrip to Rapid City, South Dakota was great! Not surprising since the state motto is “Great Faces, Great Places,” referring to the iconic Mount Rushmore National Park which, of course, we had to visit. Seeing the likeness of America’s founding fathers and beloved leaders carved in stone was amazing, but this trip was about honoring the chief cornerstone, Jesus Christ (Eph. 2:20) and partnering with the West Main church of Christ to make Him known in the Badlands.

It all began when our team of 21 disciples began the 700 mile drive north from Amarillo, Texas the last week of July. We traveled comfortably in the Comanche Trail church of Christ bus where we passed the long drive with naps, bingo and devotional songs. At one point, we pulled over to assist a widow woman stopped in the road with a flat tire. She was clearly disoriented and confused, but several of our PEOPLE hopped off the bus to calm her nerves and change the tire. The Lord was using us to offer help and hope in PLACES we never intended. Life Lesson #1: Disciples are “on call” twenty-four seven and must always be ready and willing to serve.

Our first assignment was to lead a youth rally, featuring lessons from the book of Jonah. With this in mind, we marketed the event after the popular show, The Amazing Race: Nineveh. Students from several churches in a 150 mile radius enjoyed a wonderful day of worship, skits, small groups and powerful lessons about evangelism, prejudice and compassion.

One of our primary objectives was to assist the local church with outreach. We did so in two primary ways—via service projects and street evangelism. Weeks before we arrived, the church got on social media to let the community know a group was coming to serve. Several people who had no connection to the church, made contact to ask for help.  Projects included yard work, home repairs and concrete work. One lady was so grateful so insisted on feeding us lunch. She ate with us, told some colorful stories and met members of the local church, who invited her to worship and offer help in the future. Another family we served displayed symbols of support for the gay community and Black Lives Matter. One of our team members commented that we blessed people who were different than us with no strings attached. Our goal was to demonstrate the love of Jesus in tangible ways, hoping that those who see Christians as bigots might see us in a new light that draws them closer to the gospel. Life Lesson #2: Disciples are called to help anyone in need, even those we don’t understand or hate (like Jonah, who despised the Ninevites).

Our second approach to outreach utilized a scavenger hunt, downtown, with a list of challenges that would help our team engage the public.  Before we sent them out, church planter and local evangelist Tim King, did an amazing job sharing two lessons which challenged our thinking about evangelism. Too many of us think evangelism is for a select few who have the “gift.” Tim taught us that every disciple has good news to share and that our brain is teachable and we are without excuse. The second lesson was “Knowing Your Why!” We spent time remembering WHEN & WHY we came to believe in Christ to connect those emotions to our story as we meet others to talk about Jesus. Then we went to the town square to meet total strangers, offering water, conversation and prayer. Some were evasive, but most were friendly and willing to talk. Afterward, we processed the effort and agreed it was good to step outside of our comfort zones for the sake of the gospel.  Life Lesson #3: Disciples can’t allow fear or discomfort to keep us from sharing the good news to those who are lost!

Other activities included a mini VBS, several fellowship meals with the local church and a quick trip to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. It was a life changing week with great faces in great places where we learned that being on mission for God is the AMAZING RACE!

Our first DiscipleTrip to Seattle, the Emerald City, was amazing!  A diverse team of nine disciples arrived with eyes-wide-open to engage a beautiful city besieged by darkness. The contrast was stark and our comfort zones were stretched at every level. The beauty of Seattle was breathtaking! From Mount Rainer to the Puget Sound, our eyes were thrilled with the grandeur of the great Northwest! However, our hearts were troubled by the brokenness that casts a pale shadow in every direction. Homeless people were everywhere. We saw great wealth juxtaposed alongside extreme poverty. Signs of racial tension could not be missed, along with shrines to pagan gods.

Our team joined forces with the Fremont Mission Team led by Isaac & Heather McNally. Under their capable and passionate leadership we did outreach to the homeless, prayer walked the campus of the University of Washington and encouraged their team and church members.  Street preaching in downtown Seattle definitely offered an opportunity to stand up for our Lord and share “good news” to all who passed by.  Many stopped to ask for prayer while others while others expressed their disdain with “drive by curses.” Regardless, it was a beautiful thing to see our team embrace this challenge—many doing so for the first time in their life.

We also spent time assisting Team Northwest’s outreach to West Seattle at Alki Beach where we scattered out to invite people to a sunset cookout, gave away bibles and set up a prayer station that drew many with an assortment of prayer needs. It was there we met Zayne who asked for prayer. He was open to a bible study and obeyed the Gospel of Jesus a week later! Just another example of the value short-term missions can bring to a full-time team.

In Revelation chapters four & five, we see a vivid description of heaven where a throne is encircled with “a rainbow resembling an emerald (4:3).” I can’t help but compare these two emerald cities. One in a state of collapse and the other a picture of eternal glory. One governed by the prince of this world and the other with a “lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne…(5:6).” One city worshipping every false god you can imagine while the other falls down in reverence to the only true and living God!

Yes, it was an amazing DiscipleTrip and we can’t wait to return next year (June 9-16, 2022–visit discipletrips.com/trips for details) Our trip to this Emerald City opened our eyes to the increasing need for missions here in America—so the lost can find Jesus and sing, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb, be praise and honor and power and glory, forever and ever, Amen!”

We're Back!

After a year of canceling all but one of our DiscipleTrips for 2020, we were extremely blessed to be able to go on our first DiscipleTrip of 2021!  Darrin Bible led a team of fifteen disciples to Casa de la Esperanza (House of Hope) in Anahuac, Mexico on March 13th.

As the first trip since the pandemic, there certainly were fears, but this team overcame their fears with faith in God’s care and as a result saw their faith take flight!  The children at the home had not had many people visit them in over a year so our team was welcomed with an extra dose of love and appreciation.

The team was also able to worship with the church in Anahuac in their new church building that has only been open for a little over a month.  What a privilege, to not only worship with the brothers and sisters of Anahuac, but to also witness the baptism of one of the children from Casa, as well as hear a message from the newly hired pulpit minister, Osvaldo.  The team’s cup was overflowing after just one day at Casa!

The rest of the week was equally blessed, there were work projects at the home and activities in the afternoon with the children including a VBS, BBQ, games, and a birthday fiesta!  The team was also honored to be invited to a Bible study in the home of one of the members, and to do a food distribution to the poor of the community.  At the core of this trip was the love of Jesus; His love was seen in the children of Casa, the members of the church in Anahuac, the staff of Casa and in the DiscipleTrip team.

These trips help us to see we are part of something that transcends languages and borders, we are all family, we belong to Jesus and He showered us with His love!
